So, now that I am fully trained, the device works as advertised and I have a properly calibrated monitor. There may be film and or dust buildup on the surface that you cannot see but will affect the quality of light. (especially if it is an older monitor). The first few times I calibrated it didn't seem to make a better improvement. Although it did change, it seemed a little off by my eyes. (This was based on some reference images that I know to look good through work.) I cleaned the surface of the monitor really well and after that, it seemed to make a much better improvement. I did this several times. Another tip, make sure you reset your monitors OSD settings, and clear any Adobe Gamma settings applied to your video card prior to calibrating. These things will also affect the calibration process. (They mention that in the instructions. Don't ignore it.) However, be aware that the device will age and drift rapidly, renders it pretty much useless after 2-3 years. Mine from about 3.5 years ago has drifted so far out of spec that calibration done using it have extremely obvious color flaws. If your monitor came this way you would've returned it, trust me, it's that bad. Researching further on avsforum's display calibration section, you can correct the drift somewhat if you have access to a more expensive spectrometer. The only negative comment I have regarding this product is the confusing brand names it is known by - This product is called by so many different names it gets really confusing. GretegMacbath EyeOne, X-Rite EyeOne, Pantone EyeOne.and sometimes it is referred to as i1 too. I have installed this product on both Windows XP and Mac OS X Leopard. On both platforms it has performed flawlessly. I understand LCD's in general can be tough to gauge even for high end colorimeters, so I don't know if it's really a flaw with this product or just a bad application for it. Four options are available on the pop up box entitled Match, Share, Diagnostics and Colour point. There are also three buttons down the right side to Register, look at training modules and Colour knowledge. These three buttons take you to a web page with information on the topic. Clicking on each button at the top will install separate software. This is, quite frankly, tedious as I want to just install and be ready. Other applications that have optional installation programs ask if you wish to do a manual installation process. This is something more familiar to users and is a lot more convenient. The diagnostics installation will add an icon to your desktop and launching this will perform an emissions test which takes just a few minutes. X-rite eye-one display 2 Using the program For some reason, the program doesn't automatically load a desktop icon for Match, which is the monitor calibration system on the CD. It took me listening to the tutorial to find this out. Of course, if their was an instruction manual, I could've found this out easier and quicker, but it seems to be absent. A quick guide is all that is provided with the equipment despite this being cast as a Professional calibration system. It would be my opinion that if a Professional gets stuck, they won't have the time to be watching a tutorial. Loading the Match screen brings up a window with several icons allowing for calibration of a screen, projector, scanner, printer or camera. Highlighting the item and clicking the arrow in the bottom right corner will allow you to advance to the next stage. As I am calibrating my screen, I get to choose what type of screen and after selecting the type of screen, the calibration can begin by placing the module on the screen.</p><p> It's important to note at this point that only in the tutorial does it mention that if you're calibrating a CRT monitor, you need to fix the module to the screen using the suction cups and if it's an LCD screen, the counterweight should be used and the module shouldn't be fixed to the screen. The module should be placed as near the centre of the screen as possible to ensure the best results. The program will then locate the position of the module on the screen and begin the calibration. After about 4 minutes, the calibration will beep quietly and go to the results page. The Summary will be the first page you see the Colour temperature and Gamma results with the Luminance results in a neighbouring pane. Notably, the right side of the window has Help available. Clicking on the numbers will explain what the different part of the window means. Once the profile has been saved, the action is finished and the window reverts back to the original page to start again. Some of the more fluent users may wish to choose the Advanced option for calibration. This will allow you to choose the settings you want to use. A previous profile can be loaded in or you can choose your own settings. The ambient light will be measured on this setting if you tick the box followed by an Ambient light check for Temperature and luminance. The advanced calibration will go through an extensive calibration of the Contrast which literally takes until your patience runs out. This is until you close it down in frustration and read the previously mentioned help pane down the right of the window. This will explain that the contrast has to be manually adjusted and the slider in the top right of the screen will move to the centre. The calibration will then be performed. X-rite eye-one display 2 Verdict The system is not clearly explained, but once it's been worked out, it works smoothly and effectively.</p><p> The system can't work on multiple screens so if you have a dual or triple screen set up, you'll have to decide which is your primary screen to work from that has been calibrated. It's a shame about this as other calibration units like the Huey Pro supports multiple screen use.The system calibrated the monitor no problem. It's not 'automated' through the software itself. After you calibrate your main monitor go to Display prefs and move the preview of the menu bar over to your secondary monitor. After you've done that you'll be able to calibrate the second monitor also. I did both of mine within 30 mins or so. I also wanted to add that the ambient light check is a nice quick way to check your lux level in the room even though I have read elsewhere it's not a 'perfect' level check.
